In the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that hit japan earlier this year, we recognized the great wonder of nature and were forced to think about how we could learn from it. For Japanese designer Toshihito Okura of t&o studio this meant reevaluating common day objects and finding ways of using them in new and functional ways as a means of making a positive impact on the environment. His ‘white flare’ project combines a disposable plastic hanger, fashion magazines and 3mm diameter piano wire to create a unique lighting design. The hanger ‘lamp shade’ is hung from the top of piano wire, the weight of it curving this structural element. The magazine acts as a stabilizing base for which the cords and wire are attached. The lamp is illuminated by LEDs.

White flare’ is on show at Tokyo designers week 2011 within the professional exhibition sector.
